Green

"Natural stone has many innate attributes that make it a green building

product: it is natural, low maintenance and exceptionally durable."

(University of Tennessee - Center for Clean Products)

As a contributor to the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Hahn Quarry Products, Inc. is committed to green and sustainable building. The USGBC oversees the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™. LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the United States. The LEED system emphasizes six area:

   •  Sustainable Sites

   •  Water Efficiency

   •  Energy & Atmosphere

   •  Materials & Resources

   •  Indoor Environmental Quality

   •  Innovation & Design

Natural stone can contribute LEED points in several of the categories (source - University of Tennessee):

Sustainable Sites: Light colored natural stone can reduce heat island effects.

Energy & Atmosphere: Natural stone's ability to store heat and release it slowly positively affects indoor air temperature (i.e. energy efficiency)

Materials & Resources: 1) Credits for using building stone waste beneficially. 2) Credits for using stone quarried and manufactured within 500 miles of building site.  Chicago, Saint Louis, Cleveland (well, the western suburbs), Kansas City, Minneapolis / St. Paul, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis all lie within the 500 miles radius.

Innovation & Design: Natural stone may contribute credits in life cycle costs and durability.
